Propyl Gallate Feed Grade

Propyl gallate (PG) is a synthetic antioxidant that has significance in feed and food industries. It is often associated with the field of feed additives and is widely recognized as an effective antioxidant for protecting fats, oils, and fat-soluble vitamins from oxidative deterioration in livestock and poultry feed.

Specifically, propyl gallate appears as a white to pale yellowish-brown crystalline powder with a slight bitter taste and a melting point of approximately 148-150°C.  It is produced through the esterification of gallic acid with n-propanol.  As a chain-breaking antioxidant, propyl gallate functions by donating hydrogen atoms from its phenolic hydroxyl group to lipid radicals or peroxyl radicals, thereby preventing the propagation of lipid peroxidation and protecting feed components from oxidative damage.  Studies have shown that the antioxidant activity of propyl gallate against lard is stronger than that of BHA or BHT, and it exhibits synergistic effects when used in combination with these antioxidants. 

Propyl gallate has been authorized by the European Commission as a technological feed additive in the functional group of antioxidants for all animal species, subject to specific maximum content limits depending on the animal category.  Research has demonstrated that partial substitution of ethoxyquin with propyl gallate and tea polyphenols enhances feed oxidative stability, improves hepatic antioxidant capacity, and supports gut health in broilers. 

Propyl gallate is carefully manufactured under strict quality control to maintain consistent purity, with content typically ≥98% and impurities (sulfated ash, gallic acid, chlorinated organic compounds) well within specification limits. It is available in powder form and is widely used in poultry, swine, and other livestock operations to protect feed quality and preserve nutritional value.
