BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) is a synthetic antioxidant with the chemical name 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol and CAS No. 128-37-0. It is widely used in the feed industry to prevent oxidative rancidity of animal and vegetable fats and oils, extending the shelf life of feed.

This product appears as colorless, white, or off-white crystals or crystalline powder. BHT functions by scavenging free radicals to interrupt the auto-oxidation chain reaction of fats and oils, thereby protecting lipids and fat-soluble vitamins in feed from oxidative damage. Studies have shown that BHT is effective in reducing peroxide value and malondialdehyde content in feed under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions, with optimal efficacy at 0.03–0.15 mg/kg inclusion levels. BHT is cost-effective and is often used in combination with BHA for synergistic effects.
